“His disciples came to Jesus, and awoke Him, saying, ‘Lord, save us: we perish.’ And He said to them, ‘Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” (Matt. 8:25-26).
Some people are concerned about God only when trouble comes. Then they think that they don’t deserve such hardships; or they say that God can’t help them, or that He doesn’t care about them. Afflictions teach us to trust in God.
The disciples needed to learn about trusting God when a storm arose on the Sea of Galilee. They tried everything that seasoned sailors could do to reach safety, but they had forgotten that Jesus was with them—until they had given up all hope of human aid.
Our civilization has tamed many natural disasters. But a volcano, hurricane, earthquake, mud slide, or tsunami all teach us how frail we humans truly are. We live in a stormy world where affliction, trials and temptation compete for troubling people’s lives. Even Christians will experience such troubles as well as persecution for their faith. Nothing in this world is able to calm our stormy souls. We need to pray to Jesus, as the disciples did.
With a word, Jesus calmed the sea and wind. He is God almighty. Jesus promises to be with us and help us in every need.
Only God can save us from sin and hell through the death of His Son, Jesus. Jesus assures us of God’s forgiveness of our sins through His Supper. By His words, “This is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins,” Jesus proclaims that He is present in the Lord’s Supper to give us the forgiveness we need, eternal life, and salvation from death. Holy communion is God’s solution to all our troubles.
With the gift of God’s forgiveness we can face any problem or trial in this life, knowing that God will not let any evil happen to our soul. Should we die, we know that God will take us to heaven.
The storms of life may make us feel that God is not with us. But through His Body and Blood, Jesus assures us that He is always with His children and is willing to help us. The Bible says, “If our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart.” Trust in Jesus. He is almighty God who can do all things to help us. For Jesus has already died in our place and earned our salvation. God gives us eternal life through faith in Jesus, and He answers our prayers in times of trouble.
